"17 Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows."

James 1:17 (NIV)

The thing I love most about Christmas morning, is being able to share my love for my family by giving them gifts that are meaningful and give them a glimpse of the depth of my love for them. This is not because I have to, or am expected to, but because I want to share with them my love.

As some of you will know, and those that don't will find out - I'm quite the perfectionist. Now, I know what you are thinking, he's writing a blog on not being perfect. That would be true, but I aspire for perfection everyday. I fail. But yet, I still yearn. So when it comes to searching for presents for the people I care about - failure is not an option. Therefore, the search for the perfect gift is both exhilarating and exhausting. Whilst I can't always afford the perfect gift, I will get the best thing I can, which I am learning is perfect to them.

Unfortunately, many men have lost themselves to the pursuit of perfection. Lost in the elusive mirror-shine. But you see, unlike finding gifts for our earthly lives, the gifts we have to give to Jesus are already given to us. The passage above tells us that every gift is from above. Therefore, God gives us the gift to share. The gift of love is within our control to give but God gives us freewill. You see, the creator of the heavens and earth doesn't want robots to worship Him, he wants us all to give the gift of love. He is not interested in the latest Mercedes, or the size of your earthly possessions, He wants your heart. So when you listen to the song, think about it.

What can I give Him, Poor as I am? If I were a Shepherd I would bring a lamb; If I were a Wise Man I would do my part, Yet what I can I give Him, Give my heart.

Reflect today: What will you give your Saviour this Christmas?

Dear Lord,

This advent season I look again at the manger scene. I see the shepherds with sheep. I see the wise men with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. I wonder where I fit in and then I remember your gift of love. Today, please let me give you my heart as an act of worship, love, and adoration. Help me to use this gift as you would want me.

I love you more than words can say.

Amen
