Day 4 - God-work is for life, not just Christmas

"15 Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners—of whom I am the worst. 16 But for that very reason I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his immense patience as an example for those who would believe in him and receive eternal life."

1 Timothy 1:15-16 (NIV)

As a soldier in The Salvation Army, I wear a uniform with two 'S's on the lapels which stand for 'Saved to Serve'. This is true for me and should be the same for Christ's disciples. It is something that keeps me accountable to the promises I've made and the lifestyle I live. It is not just one 'S' to be only saved, or only to serve, it is two 'S's because one without the other means nothing.

In the New Testament, we are repeatedly told that words with no action is pointless and in the same way action with no faith is just good work. The need for God-work has never been needed more. The homeless, for example, who many would never normally get much attention, have warm food given to them, shelter where possible, and people generally show kindness towards them. Whilst that is all well and good, just because The Salvation Army, Shelter, and other charities advertise at this time of year does not mean the problem goes away. Much like the Dog's Trust advert - A dog is for life, not just Christmas - God-work is for life, not just Christmas.

In Timothy we find, in my opinion, one of the best ways to sum it all up, even though we are sinners, Jesus still came, led with patience, and gave believers eternal life. Not a months life, a years life, or even centuries of life - He gave life in full for all eternity. So following Jesus' example we should all live a life of worship every single day. Showing the world the love of Christ and if that means helping the homeless 365 days a year, or visiting an elderly person, or even just sharing a coffee with someone at work - if it glorifies God, then you're definitely on the right track.

It won't always be easy, you won't always get it right but with God by your side everyday you'll become more like Christ. Never lose that yearning for something greater and He won't leave you. Don't forget that you are loved by the One.

Reflect today: What can I do today to glorify God? How can I have an influence on someone today? How can I take the spirit of Christmas with me into the New Year?

Dear Lord,

I come before you a sinner and fallen from your glorious standard, help me to be better for you. Help me to take the joy from the greatest gift given into my everyday life. Please be with all my friends at this Christmas time and I pray that you will help to soften hearts, and open eyes to the wondrous gift of Christmas. Please be with me today as I go about my life and help me to grab the opportunities I get to share your love.

Amen
