"30 But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favour with God. 31 You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus."
Luke 1:30-31 (NIV)
We've spoken a lot about fear in this advent season and now we turn to Mary.
I can't imagine how it must have felt to be an unwed teenager and to receive news of pregnancy and not only that, but that you would be bearing the Son of God. For many of us, it would be too much and we would probably run away. But you see, that is why God chose Mary because instead of running, she humbly accepted, asked for strength, and had space in her heart for God to be able to work great things through her. She wasn't not terrified but she put her trust in the Lord.
I wonder if this Christmas time, you have the strength to give over your worldly pressures, strains and worries to your heavenly Father and say to your maker - "Be born in me". I wonder with only so many days left to the celebration of His birth, what things are holding you back, what things you are fearful of? I know I am only a student but let me tell you from experience - He will not let you go. He will be there for you in the good times and the bad. He will work through you to achieve great good but you have to surrender control of your life to Him. It's not easy. Trust me. It's the hardest thing you'll ever do but it is so rewarding.
Also, it's not just a one time thing. It's a commitment that everyday you will choose Him over what the world tries to throw at you. It is about everyday choosing to yearn for more and live an aspirational lifestyle - striving to be more like Him.
Reflect today: What is holding you back? What can you give over to Him? Will you let Him 'be born in you'?
Dear Lord,
Its not always easy. There are things in my life that I want to have control over but I recognise that only through giving these to you, can I live for you. Please help me to break down the things I have that prevent you from residing in my heart. Please help me to consistently choose you over anything else. I try so hard, I yearn so much to be more like you and have the grace of Mary. Today, I ask that you be with me and those who are struggling. You know their circumstances and I just ask you work to soften hearts, mine included, so more may come to know you.
Amen
